Cobb and the Popcorn Performance

Years ago, while Cobb was still our foster pup, we began taking him on motorhome trips with us. He seamlessly just fit right into our lives and lifestyle, so it was not a big deal to bring another pup along.

One day, I did some pre-trip shopping, leaving Daisy, Lily, and Cobb awaiting my return. They knew we were going somewhere because they had been quite animated while we were packing up the night before, as they typically did.

When I returned from the grocery store, I brought my grocery bags into the house, making several trips. I hurriedly plopped them on the kitchen floor, inside the dog gate, while I went back for the rest.

When I came in with the last bag, I was shocked to see all three pups gathered around my pile of bags.

Cobb had somehow managed to open a bag of popcorn. Rather than shoo them all away, I watched with bewildered, yet amused intrigue. Cobb was putting his entire snout into the full bag, gathering up a mouthful and then putting it on the floor in front of Daisy and Lily, serving them popcorn! Next, his little snout dove in again to retrieve his own portion. Then, back in he went again, to get more for Daisy and Lily, and so on.

Daisy and Lily had never done such a thing, so I didn’t think anything of leaving the bags on the floor until I got back in with all the grocery bags to unload them. Cobb was still newer to our home and I hadn’t realized until just that moment how he had to have become extremely creative and resourceful finding food as a stray.

This time, his ingenuity benefitted Daisy and Lily too. Somehow he knew to share with them as well. What dog intentionally shares food?! I have never seen anything like it! From that point on, I never plopped groceries over the gate, onto the kitchen floor again. You know what else I haven’t done since then? Underestimate Cobb.

In the years since his popcorn escapade, I’ve witnessed his unwavering determination to obtain whatever he wants, despite his handicap, over and over again. Without uttering a word, this little boy inspires us to push harder and strive to be better in our own life. We have dubbed his creativity, “Salad Power” since one of his nicknames is “Cobb Salad”.

May your life be filled with endless Salad Power too.
